aaaaaand i’m back! with more travel-themed valentine’s day gifts, this time for the ladies in your life (click here for monday’s gift guide for the guys). go the route of jewelry and flowers if you must, but wouldn’t it be so much fun to give a sense of adventure instead? a few travel necessities caught my eye, including the luxurious leather travel set from aspinal of london (*swoon*), the rose gold eye mask from anthropologie (this is a must for red-eye flights, as i’ve mentioned before here), and the heart-covered ban.do phone charger for when you’re out on the go (if you hate hearts, there is also an adorable pink and gold version here).

to inspire you for more adventure, i highly recommend kate spade’s “places to go, people to see” and phaidon’s “mexico: the cookbook.” i received “places to go, people to see” for christmas, and cannot put it down – it has everything from city guides to the best hotel cocktails to what to buy locally in cities around the globe. plus, the photography is amazing (i keep fighting the urge to rip out pages and frame them). my mother-in-law received “mexico: the cookbook” from my sister-in-law after her recent jaunt to san miquel de allende, and holy tamale, this book is amazing. filled with pages of recipes and photos of the most amazing food you ever did see, this book has me wanting to hop on a plane and head south asap.

finally, i couldn’t resist including another imaginenations product. wendy gold is so talented and i want every single thing on her website, including this stunning painted globe. she personalizes both globes and maps (including push-pin maps to track your travels), and i can’t think of a better way to get inspired for future adventures.

whether you love it or hate it, valentine’s day is back. i love valentine’s, and always have, even though i was rarely with a date when the day rolled around each year. to celebrate this year, i’ve compiled two travel-themed gift guides for your loved ones, whether they be significant others, friends, or family. first up: the guys.

i keep seeing the book, where chefs eat, all over the internet, and would love to flip through it. it chronicles the best restaurants around the world, as chosen by chefs. yes, please! for the adventurers out there, i love these teensy “backpacking colognes” from juniper ridge that are made from trail scents and will tuck away into tiny spaces. if the big sur scent is anything like big sur itself, i am in. throw in the quirky moose tourist print from gi artlab, and i’m already dreaming of hiking through the pacific northwest. of course most men could use an update to their travel gear, and the everlane weekender and owen & fred dopp kit will do just that (and if you haven’t checked out everlane yet, please do so – they are making great products responsibly). finally, the wall travel map is from my favorite, imaginenations, which sells stunning maps and artistic globes (and delightful note cards that i received for christmas). track past and future travels on pins, and start dreaming of faraway lands.

the merriest of travel gifts

a couple weeks late, but happy new year! the holidays are always a whirlwind for me with travel and catching up with out of town friends; it can be busy, but it’s by far my favorite time of year. this year, i found everyone talking about their travels a bit more – is it because i usually have travel on the brain, or are people starting to value more the time spent exploring and make it a priority? i hope the latter, but can’t quite be sure. i was lucky enough to hear friends’ and family’s stories from their recent trips to belgium, mexico, germany, new york, peru, argentina, france, and india. what fun!

the gifts i received this year reflected the jetsetter spirit, and made them so fun to open! from handmaid linens from mexico to kate spade’s new travel picture book (please just go buy it – it is perfect), it seems that new sights and adventures were on everyone’s minds. take a look, and let me know your favorite gifts from the holidays.

i know it’s already mid-september (how?!), but i keep wanting to hold on to those last few scorching hot days. temperatures of 100+ degrees and crazy humidity? bring it on. as long as i get my warm nights and endless amounts of sun, i’m one happy camper. so i’m pretty thrilled that i stumbled upon sisters of los angeles (SoLA), founded by three amazing angeleno women, who, between them, add architect, author, product development specialist, manufacturer’s rep, fashion/lifestyle publicist, and marketing expert to their resumes. travel-friendly spring finds

i thought it was about time to put together a couple of travel-friendly spring outfits (think: bold colors, comfortable shoes, a nice straw tote), but had no idea that i was already dreaming of my south african safari (those earrings!). since south africa is less than two months away, perhaps i should start planning my packing strategy. we are only allowed to bring soft duffle bags (i.e. no “wheelies” per my south african travel agent), so this could take some thought. in the meantime, enjoy the fun colors out this spring, and add a little safari to your look with some cheeky accessories.

travel tips: how to pack for fall style

traveling in the fall or winter can be difficult due to the size and quantity of the clothes required to pack (e.g. those boots needed for cooler weather probably take up a little more room than summer’s teeny weeny bikini and t-strap sandals). so, what to do?

wear your bulkiest clothes on the flight, including your boots, coat, and tote
try to bring only one jacket that works for both day and night
stick to one color scheme, or bring prints that all work together (note below the gold, browns, and black tones all work together due to the combos in the bags and jacket)
remember to keep your clothes appropriate for your travel – if you will be doing a lot of walking (like i do), then pack comfortable shoes. perhaps replace heeled boots for evening with wedge boots or a flat that is dressed up with a lot of hardware.
pack accessories that can dress clothes up a bit so you don’t have to have costume changes throughout the day

map-themed goods for the back-to-school blues

well, school is back in session. this usually means my travels are winding down since my husband is a ~~grad student~~ professor (doctor!), and is tied to the school calendar. our travel budget suffered a bit, too, with that whole “moving across the country” bit that happened last month! luckily, i’ve found some map-themed goods that are helping me scratch the old travel itch without yet hitting “purchase” on some tickets to mexico. i love a good map (i still use an atlas over gps whenever possible, call me old-fashioned), and these are some of my favorites i’ve seen lately. enjoy!

my favorite trends: the neutral ankle strap flat

after three long, glorious weeks off work, life is back to normal. i went back to work this week and my husband is preparing for his classes he will teach this fall. i feel like summer just started, yet here we are, already in august.

though summer may be wrapping up, the texas heat is definitely here to stay. i’ve been looking for flats that are cool enough for the heat (walking around san antonio comfortably required as much skin to be showing as possible!), but in earthy neutral hues that won’t look quite so springy. searching online, i found a lot of options, and it turned out that all of my favorites had a unique addition: the ankle strap. how cute are these! (side note: i usually like to show options in all different price points, but i just could not resist showing all of these beautiful flats, though some are definitely out of reach price-wise.)

i’m also a big fan of ankle straps for traveling ever since a walking tour debacle when i made the ridiculous mistake of wearing slip-on sandals for a full-day stroll across madrid. i almost lost my shoe four times and kept stepping out of them on stair climbs (it was my first time to europe; excuse me for trying to look chic). sometimes people (myself included) shy away from the ankle strap because it can appear to cut your leg length in half. if that keeps you up at night (no judgment), then just find an ankle strap in a color close to your skin tone, and you’ll be good to go.
