holiday travel gift guide: the kiddos

travel-holiday-gift-guide-children
christmas is literally next week…are you ready?  just in case, i have a few more gift guides up my sleeve.  i would have loved to have posted these earlier, but i actually do have a day job (shocking, i know).  this week: the kiddos!  i had so much fun putting this one together because the thought of inspiring kids to travel is such a great one.  i still remember my first travel journal i wrote during a trip to disneyland with my cousins and aunt and uncle – i still read it!  these gifts will have children dreaming of faraway lands in no time, and realizing there are different cultures than just their own.  bon voyage!

travel journal posts from my trip to italy, 2005

one thing you should know about me before you read any further is that i like lists. i like to chronicle things. i like order. this means i have a notebook to keep track of every book i read, which artists i like, and…yes…all trips i have taken (imagine what long lost love i found when i discovered pinterest!).

i stumbled upon this travel log from pamela barsky in anthropologie when i was in college. perrrfect. i snatched it up, and have since written about every trip i have taken, starting with my very first road trip in college (i was a really good daughter, and actually called my mom for permission. no joke). sometimes i fall behind (i still need to fill in details from my trip to spain circa 2003), but most of the trips are fully filled out with photos.

i have so much fun flipping through the pages and remembering all of the funny things that happened surprises i encountered along the way…things i would have probably forgotten about without the book. and seeing as how i’m only about 20% through it, i will have plenty of pages for many trips to come!

how do you remember your trips?

my favorite products: travel journals

when i was ten, i took my first trip away from home without my mom. it was a trip to disney world with my cousins, and my mom gave me some valuable advice: write everything down. turns out, my fourth-grade self was pretty hilarious, and my cousins and i have been very entertained flipping through our old travel journals. reading through my journals is one of my very favorite things about taking trips. i have a horrible memory, and i’ve found that if i don’t write down the funny, the interesting, and the strange as it happens, i won’t remember them in even a couple of days.

i now prefer the small, brown moleskin notebooks for my travel diaries. they are small enough to slip into my pocket or clutch, have lined pages (being an accountant, i’m really not one for going outside of the lines), and i can draw on the cover if i feel any artistic inspiration (that happened once in a park in mendoza, argentina, and i wish i could tell you the outcome wasn’t regrettable).

though the moleskins are my favorite, i’ve seen a lot of super cute journals recently that make me want to branch out a little. see below for some of my favorites. are there any you recommend?
